What fascinates me about painting is the opportunity to explore the interaction of structure, color and accidents as a way of learning about my own rational and emotional being.
As a mathematician I find beauty in structure. Structure in a painting is the underlying order, the organizing principle which makes a coherent entity out the painting's visual elements - forms, negative and positive shapes, light and dark patterns, lines etc. It would be a purely intellectual exercise if it were not for color and the uncertainties introduced into the process by the particularities of the medium.

Color introduces an emotional element into the painting, expressing moods and feelings. The interaction with the medium brings an element of randomness and chance, which allows for the expression of the unconscious. It is that part that eludes the control of the rational mind that reveals itself in the presence of accidents. When a visual idea struggles its way into reality by way of interacting with the many limitations and possibilities of the medium, it allows for the serendipitous expression of the unconscious. |
I find the cubist approach a powerful methodology for inquiring about the underlying structure that exists in nature. I work primarily in oil because of its extraordinary versatility and its vibrant colors. My favorite subjects are still lives and models which inhabit a world of intense energy and colors. Painting allows me to reach a balance between spontaneity and control. |
